Better workout your arms before buying this book! Not only is the name a mouthful the book weighs a bazillion pounds! The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook has every recipe the show ever tested in their kitchen from 2001 to 2018. That’s a lot of recipes (I got my copy last year, so mine’s only got recipes until 2017).
I don’t have cable, so I’ve never actually watched the show, but I hear the show is a big deal. From what I understand though, and find very impressive, that this is a serious cooking show – the chefs literally test every recipe multiple times to perfect it before it airs and then on the show they show a few of the tests. But you know the recipes work. My favorite thing about the book though is that for every recipe, they explain why the recipe they’ve landed on works and sometimes they’ll even tell you things you shouldn’t do, shouldn’t substitute, etc.
It’s all designed for successful cooking experiences in the kitchen. It’s got the occasional photos but this book is more about the recipes and the instructions, rather than about photos. If you’re an awesome cook, I can almost picture the understanding nods as you read the insights with each recipe. But you’ll certainly appreciate the insights if you’re not too experienced. I’d even go as far as to say, if there’s someone in your life who’s just starting out on their own with their very first kitchen in their very first home, The Complete America’s Test Kitchen TV Show Cookbook would make a great present. Even though the size of the book is daunting, every single recipe in there is something you’d want to eat and so far of all the ones I’ve tested out, there’s not a single recipe with any strange ingredients.
